2015 Contest description & submission

PLEASE NOTE: The 2015 ACCES Visualization Contest is now completed. The following page is provided solely for archival purposes.

The ACCES Visualization Contest is now open for contributions from students and post-docs within the School of Engineering (STI) and the School of Architecture, Civil & Environmental Engineering (ENAC) of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

Categories

Entries are invited in two categories:

  • Image category
a single high-resolution image illustrating the visualization of scientific / engineering content

  • Animation category
a video illustrating the visual temporal evolution of scientific / engineering content

Each category will be judged independently, and awards will be presented for both categories.

Entries

  • Entries must have a scientific / engineering content that is computer generated (not a photo), and be based on the contributors’ own numerical simulation or experimental data.
  • Contributors must be Bachelor or Master students enrolled in an STI or ENAC Section, or doctoral students or post-docs employed by a laboratory fully or partially affiliated with STI or ENAC
  • Contributors may be individuals or groups of individuals.
  • Multiple entries by the same contributors are permitted, but must contain substantially different content.
  • Entries must be provided in the format indicated below.
  • Entries must be original work; if already published, written permission to participate must be obtained from the journal editor.
  • Contributors retain ownership of their entries, but must consent to ACCES displaying their entry in poster format and on the ACCES web site.

To assist in the production of their entry, contributors may be given access to the ACCES CoViz facility. (To request access, contact [email protected].)

Judging

Entries will be judged by the following panel comprised of both engineers and artists:

  • Marilyne Andersen (Lighting architect, Dean ENAC-EPFL)
  • Jamani Caillet (Graphics artist & civil engineer, Mediacom-EPFL)
  • Christian Gonzenbach (Artist on the Campus, EPFL)
  • Nicolas Henchoz (Technology design, Director EPFL+ECAL Lab)
  • Demetri Psaltis (Biological imaging, Dean STI-EPFL)
  • Sabine Süsstrunk (Computational imaging, Professor I&C-EPFL)

A global set of criteria will be used to select entries, with particular credit given to:

  • innovative visualization approaches to communicate scientific / engineering content,
  • the creative use of the visual medium to reveal a remarkable aspect of engineering.

Awards

For each of the categories, Image and Animation, the following prizes will be awarded:

  • First prize:         600 CHF
  • Second prize:    400 CHF
  • Third prize:        200 CHF
  • Honorable mentions

All winning entries will receive a certificate recognizing their successful contribution. In addition, winning entries will be:

  • exhibited as a poster in an EPFL public display area,
  • included on the ACCES web site.

Format

Entries in both Image and Animation categories must consist of a poster-ready electronic document, together with an image or animation.

Poster-ready document

Each poster-ready document must contain the following information (see example templates below)

  • a concise, descriptive title
  • a list of contributors and their affiliations
  • a high-resolution image (Image category) or series of images (Animation category) presenting the visualization results
  • an accompanying explanatory text (of no more than 250 words) providing scientific details regarding the images and, if appropriate, how they were created and rendered
  • references to any background and/or associated articles, and acknowledgement of any external contributions

Each poster-ready document must conform to the following format:

  • standard UHD 16:9 size (e.g. 297 x 167 mm, 300 dpi) in landscape orientation
  • two column format, with image on left and explanatory text on right
  • layout, text fonts and size to be, if possible, the same as in the example template files
  • submitted as an editable file (e.g. MS Word, MS PowerPoint, OpenOffice, LaTeX)

For the prize-winning entries, large-size posters will be created by the contest organizers directly from the submitted documents, expanded to approximately 960 x 540 mm format. (Images must be of sufficient quality at this enlarged scale.) Contributors will be asked to be present at their posters during a general presentation session to answer questions and provide further information.

In addition to the poster-ready document, contributors must supply in a separate file a high-resolution image or animation (depending on chosen category) in the following format:

Image

Entries to the Image category should provide an image file in JPEG, PNG or TIFF format of high resolution (if possible, at least 8 Mpixels). No specific size or format is imposed, although the image must be the same as in the poster-ready document.

Animation

For the Animation category, videos must be submitted in MOV, MPEG or AVI format that represent an animated version of poster-ready document (rather than a compilation of different results). The total play time must be of no more than 2 minutes; this time limit will be strictly enforced. The files should begin with a title page (5 seconds long) containing a title and the names and affiliations of the contributors. Entries should be self-explanatory using if necessary embedded subtitles and text. If available, the animation can include a sound track.

The quality of the video must be sufficient to enable full-screen full-HD (1920×1080) viewing, while maintaining reasonable file size (through appropriate choices of play time, codec and frame rate).

Submission

Send your entry by e-mail to [email protected], including in the message the following information:

  • Title of contribution,
  • Contributor(s) name(s),
  • Contributor(s) affiliation(s),
  • Contact person

Please contact [email protected] if your entry file is larger than 10 MB.

Deadline

The deadline for submitting entries is 15 March 2015.

The judges’ list of winning entries will be communicated by end April 2015.

Example templates

The following examples provide a template of the required format for the poster-ready document. (Click on images to download the corresponding MS Word file. Note that your image should be higher resolution that in these poster-ready documents.
