Double Degree EPFL-ENS Lyon | Life Sciences Engineering

EPFL and ENS Lyon join forces in order to offer their students a double degree program in biology and life sciences engineering.

A high-quality international education with an original combination of basic research and cutting-edge engineering.

Dual curriculum over a three-year period leading to a double master’s degree:

  • Master in Biology, ENS de Lyon/Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL)
  • Master of Science in Life Sciences Engineering, EPFL – Accredited by the “Commission française des Titres de l’Ingénieur”

EPFL students

The candidate holds a Bachelor certificate from EPFL with an overall average of at least 5/6. By the time of application to the double degree program, the candidate has already been admitted into the master’s program in life sciences engineering at EPFL.

ENS Lyon students

The candidate has successfully finished the 3rd year of “Licence Sciences de la vie, parcours Biologie” co-organized by ENS Lyon/UCBL. By the time of application, the candidate has already been admitted into the master in biology at ENS Lyon/UCBL. He/she must have an excellent overall average as well as a solid background in mathematics and physics.

Language requirements

A level of at least B2 in English and French is strongly recommended. The courses of the master’s program in life sciences engineering at EPFL are mostly taught in English. The courses of the master in biology at ENS Lyon are taught in French and English.

EPFL students

Students must inform the section of life sciences engineering of their interest in the double degree program at the end of January (1st year of master’s degree). The deadline for application is set on 1st March. This selection doesn’t guarantee the admission to ENS Lyon for the double degree program.
Students apply to the master at ENS Lyon according to following process and calendar.

ENS Lyon students

Interview with the teaching staff of the master in biology. Selected candidates will receive a letter of recommendation to be included in the EPFL application file. They must contact the Head of the Department of Biology in order to validate the study plan. This selection doesn’t guarantee the admission to EPFL for the double degree program.
Selected students apply to the master’s program at EPFL according to following process and calendar by 15 January or 15 April.

Double degree program over a 3-year period leading to the acquisition of following degrees:

  • Master in Biology, ENS Lyon / UCBL
  • Master of Sciences in Life Sciences Engineering, EPFL – recognized by the Commission française des Titres d’Ingénieurs

For the graduation at ENS Lyon/UCBL in the context of the double degree program with EPFL, 120 ECTS are recognized, including 30 ECTS among the 90 ECTS earned at EPFL.

For the graduation at EPFL in the context of the double degree program with ENS Lyon/UCBL, 120 ECTS are recognized, including 30 ECTS among the 90 ECTS earned at ENS Lyon/UCBL. According to the rules at EPFL, an industrial internship is mandatory.

EPFL students

1st et 2nd semester of master’s degree at EPFL : courses (60 ECTS) + internship in the industry (at least 8 ECTS)
3rd, 4th and 5th semester of master’s degree at ENS Lyon : courses + research internship (90 ECTS)
6th semester: master’s thesis in a lab supervised by a professor or a senior scientist of EPFL as well as a teaching tutor of ENS Lyon (30 ECTS)

ENS Lyon students

1st et 2nd semester of master’s degree at ENS Lyon : courses + internship (60 ECTS)
3rd, 4th and 5th semester of master’s degree at EPFL : courses + advanced courses in mathematics + internship in the industry of at least 8 ECTS (90 ECTS)
6th semester: master’s project in a lab supervised by a professor or a senior scientist of EPFL as well as a teaching tutor of ENS Lyon (30 ECTS)
