Swiss customs & patterns

Cleanliness is an important value in Switzerland. It demonstrates respect for others and for the environment. It is your responsibility to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of your home throughout your stay.

Clean and ventilate your home regularly will allow you to keep it in the same condition as when you entered it and avoid any problems upon your departure.

The cantonal and municipal authorities encourage people to ensure compliance with public places. Waste must be disposed of in one of the many bins provided for this purpose. There are even small plastic bags (especially in parks) to collect and dispose of dog feces in the trash.

The Swiss are fans of sorting their garbage for recycling. You should be aware that there are laws and obligations that differ between municipalities.

It may be a cliché (the famous Swiss punctuality!), but arriving on time for an apartment or room visit is essential. If you are unable to attend an appointment, it is important to tell the person you are visiting as far in advance as possible.

In Switzerland, tranquility of others is very important and everyone is required to take due precautions to ensure this.

Respect for peace is a principle which is guaranteed by both the federal and cantonal law as well as by the rules and conditions of rentals in the Canton of Vaud (PDF). In addition, life in common involves taking into account the reasonable expectations of your neighbors in a spirit of mutual respect – and sometimes compromise.
