Since January 2016, EPFL authors publishing a paper, a book, a book chapter or a proceedings in Gold Open Access may benefit from a financial support. This funding from the EPFL Library can be achieved by means of either a partial reimbursement of the Gold OA publication fees or special conditions negotiated with some publishers or journals.
Open Access fund
The request for refund can be made by email at [email protected]
Reimbursement of 2/3 of the APC (or BPC, or conference registration fees), with a maximum of CHF 2,500 per publication.
- On a first-come, first-served basis (based on the acceptance date of the publication) until the fund has been used up;
- Pure Gold OA publications immediately available online without restrictions at the time of publication or conference;
- Formal proceedings in a reputable peer-reviewed research venue;
- Publications or journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) or members of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) or the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE);
- No co-financing for hybrid publications;
- Reimbursements limited to 2 publications per lab annually;
- Funds specifically dedicated for Gold OA fees (grants, contracts, etc.) must be used first;
- APCs of publications published in December can be reimbursed until the end of January of the next year;
Specific agreements with publishers
■ Full APC funding
The article quota is expected to be exhausted at the beginning of October.
EPFL affiliated authors (corresponding author) can publish Open Access at no cost in full gold and hybrid journals at ACS (list of titles).
During the contract term (2023-2025), the number of Open Access articles taken in charge is restricted at a national level (138, 177, and 216 publications, respectively). If in any year the maximum number of articles included in the agreement is exceeded, or if the eligibility of the authors has not been validated by EPFL, the publishing invoice will be directly sent to authors.
Articles published in the framework of SNSF-funded projects are excluded from the agreement. They are eligible for a reduced APC of $3,000.
EPFL affiliated authors (corresponding author) can publish Open Access at no cost in 30 hybrid journals at AIP (list of titles).
During the contract term (2022-2024), the number of Open Access articles taken in charge is restricted at a national level (136, 140, and 142 publications, respectively). If in any year the maximum number of articles included in the agreement is exceeded, or if the eligibility of the authors has not been validated by EPFL, the publishing invoice will be directly sent to authors.
Free publication in Open Access in the following titles: Annual Review of Cancer Biology, Annual Review of Environment and Resources, Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science, Annual Review of Political Science, and Annual Review of Public Health.
Free and unlimited publication in Gold Open Access for EPFL affiliated authors (corresponding author) in 330 hybrid journals and 40 Gold OA journals (List of titles) at Cambridge University Press.
Publication fees in Cogitatio journals fully covered by the Library
Free publication under Gold OA in all ECS journals.
EPFL affiliated authors can now publish in Open Access at no cost in more than 2,000 hybrid and fully Gold OA journals (see the titles’ list). Cell Press titles, the Lancet and some selected society journals are not included in the agreement).
Once the publication is accepted, the corresponding author is notified that the paper can be published in Gold OA in the frame of the R&P agreement. The corresponding author has to specify his/her affiliation and the research funding and has to choose a creative commons license for the dissemination of the article (CC-BY or CC-BY-NC-ND). The EPFL Library validates the eligibility of the author.
For the three first years (2020, 2021, and 2022), the number of Gold OA articles taken in charge is restricted at a national level (2850, 3000, and 3150 publications, respectively). The offer is valid as long as the quota of submitted papers in the corresponding year is not used up. If in any year the maximum number of APCs is exceeded, or if the eligibility of the authors has not been validated by EPFL, the OA invoice will be directly sent to authors (in the case of hybrid OA, the decision can be reverted). From 2023, the number of Open Access publications will be unlimited.
EPFL affiliated authors (corresponding author) can now publish in Open Access at no cost in Frontiers journals (with an annual quota).
The agreement covers all articles accepted after January 1st 2023, as long as the quota has not been reached.
EPFL affiliated authors (corresponding author) can publish Open Access at no cost in all Gold Open Access journals at IEEE.
During the contract term (2022-2024), the number of Open Access articles taken in charge is restricted at a national level (44 publications per year). If in any year the maximum number of articles included in the agreement is exceeded, or if the eligibility of the authors has not been validated by EPFL, the publishing invoice will be directly sent to authors.
Free and unlimited publication in Open Access for EPFL affiliated authors (corresponding author) in 56 hybrid journals and 18 Gold OA journals (list of titles) at IOP.
EPFL affiliated authors can publish in Open Access at no cost in OUP hybrid journals (see the titles’ list).
During the contract term (2023-2024), the number of Open Access articles taken in charge is restricted at a national level (298 in 2023, 304 in 2024). If in any year the maximum number of articles included in the agreement is exceeded, or if the eligibility of the authors has not been validated by EPFL, the publishing invoice will be directly sent to authors.

Springer
EPFL affiliated authors can publish in Open Access at no cost in more than 2,000 hybrid Springer journals (see the titles’ list).
Once the publication is accepted, the corresponding author is notified that this can be published in Gold OA in the frame of the Read and Publish Agreement. The corresponding author has to specify his/her affiliation and research funding and has to select a creative commons license for the dissemination of the article. The EPFL Library validates the eligibility of the author.
During the contract term (2023-2025), the number of Gold OA articles taken in charge is restricted at a national level (1479, 1520 and 1430 publications, respectively). If in any year the maximum number of APCs is exceeded, or if the eligibility of the authors has not been validated by EPFL, the OA invoice will be directly sent to authors.
Nature
The annual quota for Nature Research journals has been reached.
EPFL affiliated authors can publish in Open Access at no cost in 37 Nature Research hybrid journals (see the titles’ list).
Once the publication is accepted, the corresponding author is notified that this can be published in Gold OA in the frame of the Read and Publish Agreement. The corresponding author has to specify his/her affiliation and research funding and has to select a creative commons license for the dissemination of the article. The EPFL Library validates the eligibility of the author.
During the contract term (2023-2025), the number of Gold OA articles taken in charge is restricted at a national level (72, 80, 88 publications, respectively). If in any year the maximum number of APCs is exceeded, or if the eligibility of the authors has not been validated by EPFL, the OA invoice will be directly sent to authors.
Free Open Access publication for EPFL affiliated authors (corresponding author) in more than 2’430 hybrid and Gold OA journals at Taylor & Francis (List of titles).
During the contract term (2021, 2022, and 2023), the number of OA publications supported at the national level is limited (260, 366, and 450 publications, respectively). The offer is valid as long as the quota is not exhausted. If the maximum number is exceeded, or if the eligibility of an author is not validated by EPFL, the invoice for publication costs is sent directly to the corresponding author.
The article quota is expected to be exhausted at the beginning of October.
EPFL affiliated corresponding authors (corresponding author) can publish Open Access at no cost in nearly 1400 hybrid journals at Wiley (List of titles). The agreement is valid for articles (primary research and review) accepted after 1 May 2021. APCs (Article Processing Charges) are deducted from the total annual APC quota on a first-come, first-serve basis until such time as the total APC Fund for the current year has been reached.

EPFL affiliated authors get a discount on the publishing fee ($4975 instead of $5475) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.
15% discount on APCs in Biochemical Society Transactions, Biochemical Journal et Essays in Biochemistry.
10% discount on APCs in the Gold OA journal Science Advances. An additional 4% discount for AAAS members applies.
50% discount is applied on APCs of publisher’s journals.
