From the production of clean energy to water purification, managing transport safety and the protection of the environment, materials are at the heart of some of society’s biggest issues—NCCR MARVEL is responding to these challenges by using supercomputers to design and discover new materials through quantum simulations. Revealing how matter behaves at the atomic level, our simulations allow researchers to design new materials, improve their performance or promote the emergence of original physical properties. We can process massive amounts of data and so analyze and test thousands of promising combinations at a time, much more quickly than what could be done in the lab.
