Our history

Our story began in 2019, when our former dean Gisou van der Goot learned that approx. 30% of EPFL’s CO2 emissions come from academic travels. She then decided to act to reduce the school’s environmental footprint by launching the Travel Less Without LossTravel Less Without Loss awareness project, which would lead to the creation of the SV Sustainability Office.

As the first sustainability office in an EPFL school, we work to reduce the environmental impacts of the School of Life Sciences, in close collaboration with our researchers, students and staff. We aim to bring solutions to the challenges of research and teaching activities and to the climate objectives of EPFL.

  • Consultative and collaborative approach: We believe that the SV community holds the keys for change in its hands. That’s why SV Sustainability actively consults and listens to the school’s members: they have the best visibility on their scope of action. We encourage and support initiatives at all levels of our community.
  • Sharing tools and knowledge: We are dedicated to share resources and feedback freely to support everybody to make laboratories more sustainable.
  • Impact as a priority: We focus on tangible, high-impact initiatives.

To assist the School of Life Sciences in reducing its environmental impact through an understanding of the imperatives of life science research, education and innovation.

  • Map the sources of pollution and CO2 emissions in order to achieve goals of the Confederation and the Paris Agreements,
  • Raise awareness in our community to act collectively and adopt sustainable habits,
  • Train our students so that they acquire the keys for change and become strong actors in the transition to a more resilient world,
  • Engage and support sustainability stakeholders who collaborate with the school, including our suppliers, contractors and other institutions.
