Computer Architecture & Integrated Systems

All of computing, from applications to technologies, is reaching a tipping point in its evolution. On the one hand, the emergence of novel embedded applications (e.g., traffic monitoring or e-health) and client/server computing paradigms (e.g., cloud computing) requires innovation in mobile devices all the way to servers and datacenters. On the other hand, with a slowdown in transistor efficiencies, digital platforms of all kind are witnessing a revolution towards energy-centric designs on both conventional and emerging disruptive implementation technology (e.g., carbon electronics, phase-change memories, 3D-chip integration).

Computer Architecture and Integrated Systems research at EPFL is pursuing both designs for novel paradigms from approximate to specialized computing, as well as automated design optimization methodologies to cope with the ever-increasing levels of chip integration and system complexity in future digital platforms.
