The Institute of Architecture and the city (IA) was established to promote research in architecture and urban planning. This fundamental mission reflects the fact that high-quality architecture, well-constructed structures and buildings that fit in seamlessly with their surroundings, natural and urban landscapes and cultural heritage are clearly in the public interest.
IA works closely with other university institutes in Switzerland and abroad, and collaborates on specific projects with other ENAC disciplines including regional development and society (at the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning). This research involves continuous interaction and covers a wide range of cross-disciplinary projects, some of which result from applications for EU and Swiss research grants (mainly from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Swiss Commission for Technology & Innovation). The findings of this research are brought together under the School of Architecture and the Architecture and Sciences of the City PhD program at EPFL’s Doctoral School.
