Alain Nussbaumer, voted best teacher in the civil engineering section for 2024, could very well have studied mechanical engineering and gone into the aerospace or shipbuilding industry. Because what he’s really excited about are structures of all shapes and sizes.

For his master’s degree in civil engineering, Matthieu Fehlmann worked on a project in Australia where he studied methods for laterally stabilizing an eight-story timber building without using concrete. This experience was both personally and academically enriching, and it gave him exposure to a whole different set of construction standards.

Scientists explore the complexity of rocks within the Earth's crust

A team of EPFL scientists has provided insight into the mechanisms at work in geothermal reservoirs located deep underground, known as supercritical reservoirs. Through a combination of computer simulations and lab experiments, they showed that rocks located between five and eight kilometers deep in the Earth’s crust are also permeable to fluids.
