Double Degree EPFL-ENS Lyon | Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering

EPFL and ENS Lyon join forces in order to offer their students a double degree program in science of matter, biotechnology and chemical engineering.

This program allows ENS Lyon students to follow an engineer education and EPFL students to take advantage of a research education.

Dual curriculum over a three-year period leading to a double master’s degree:

  • Master in science of matter, ENS Lyon/Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL)
  • Master of Science in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, EPFL – Accredited by the “Commission française des Titres de l’Ingénieur”

EPFL students

The candidate holds a Bachelor certificate from EPFL with an overall average of at least 5/6. By the time of application to the double degree program, the candidate has arleady been admitted into the master’s program in chemical engineering and biotechnology.

ENS Lyon students

The candidate has obtained the “Licence de Chimie, parcours Sciences de la Matière” from ENS Lyon/UCBL. The candidate has spent an exchange semester at EPFL during the 2nd semester of “M1 Sciences de la Matière” and the related ECTS credits were validated (courses and internship). Application before 15 September. By the time of application, the candidate has already been admitted into the master “Sciences de la Matière, parcours Science et Innovation” from ENS Lyon and UCBL.

Language requirements:

A level of at least B2 in English and French is strongly recommended. The courses of the double degree program are mostly taught in English.

EPFL students

  1. Students must inform the section of chemical engineering and biotechnology of their interest in the double degree program at the end of January (1st year of master’s degree). The deadline for application is set on 1st March. This selection doesn’t guarantee the admission to ENS Lyon for the dual degree program.
  2. Students apply to the master at ENS Lyon according to following process and calendar.

ENS Lyon students

  1. Interview with the teaching staff of the master in science of matter. Selected candidates will receive a letter of recommendation to be included in the EPFL application file. They must contact the Head of the Department of science of matter in order to validate the study plan. This selection doesn’t guarantee the admission to EPFL for the dual degree program.
  2. Selected students apply to the master’s program at EPFL according to following process and calendar by 15 January or 15 April.
  3. Students register the application ENS Lyon prior to the 15 January or prior to the 15 April by completing the corresponding online form. They are requested to upload a copy of the application sent to EPFL instead of the motivation letter.
