Biographical Statement

Assyr Abdulle obtained a professional diploma in violin at the Geneva Conservatory of Music in 1993 and earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Geneva in 2001. He completed his first post-doctoral year at Princeton University in the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics with successive positions at ETH Zurich (research associate), the University of Basel (assistant professor), and the University of Edinburgh (associate professor). He was appointed full professor and chair of computational mathematics and numerical analysis at EPFL in 2009.

At EPFL, he has been the founding director of the master in computational science in 2009, director of the MATHICSE institute in 2016 and the founding director of the Institute of Mathematics in 2017.

His research interests concern numerical methods for multiscale partial differential equations, deterministic and stochastic dynamical systems, numerical homogenization methods, model order reduction techniques and Bayesian inverse problems for differential equations with applications in biology, chemistry, material science, geology and medicine.  He has contributed to develop the Heterogeneous Multiscale Method (HMM), has developed numerical methods for multiscale and ergodic stochastic problems and has introduced the orthogonal Runge-Kutta-Chebyshev (ROCK) methods that have since been generalised to multiscale stochastic systems.

His awards include the SciCADE New Talent Award (2005), an Advanced Research Fellowship by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (2007), the SIAM James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing (2009) and the SIAM Germund Dahlquist Prize (2013). At EPFL he received the best Mathematics Section Teacher Award in 2015 and 2016.
