LAB-U Laboratory of Urbanism
Who we are
Lab-U is EPFL’s Laboratory of Urbanism, founded and directed by Paola Viganò.
What we do
Lab-U explores the possibility of conceiving the city as a renewable resource, exploring the potential of a transformation that recycles the existing to the full. Its approach intimately relates design to theory, believing in the strong capacity of the design project to produce knowledge. The City-Territory, interpreted as a concrete potential for the construction of a sustainable and innovative urban dimension, is LAB-U’s federative research and teaching topic, around which different teaching units, research proposals and initiatives are gathered.
Last teaching activities
Roberto Sega’s PhD thesis entitled “New Alpine ecologies, industrialisation and construction of the city-territory” was awarded as one of the “SPECIAL MENTIONS” of the Third Manuel de Solà-Morales European Prize 2021.
The exhibition documents life within the “Horizontal Metropolis”, discussing landscape transformations underway, through theoretically grounded interdisciplinary approaches, and combining spatial analysis, case studies, and research by design.
A warm welcome to Noélie Lecoanet and Flore Guichot, two new PhD students joining the Laboratory of Urbanism through The Doctoral Program Architecture and Sciences of the City (EDAR) is part of Doctoral School of EPFL (EDOC).
