The Micromechanical and Horological Design Laboratory (Instant-Lab) is located on the EPFL Neuchâtel Campus in Switzerland, within the Microcity building. Directed by Prof. Simon Henein, the laboratory currently comprises around a dozen senior scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.
The laboratory specializes in the creation of novel mechanisms incorporating both kinematic and technological innovations at the centimetre scale. Its scientific approach draws inspiration from mechanical design fields such as contemporary and classical horology, robotics, and aerospace engineering.
Current research projects focus on mechanical watchmaking, biomedical instrumentation, and aerospace mechanisms. These domains share many technological challenges and benefit from closely connected industrial ecosystems. From 2012 to 2020, Prof. Henein held the Patek Philippe Endowed Chair.
In addition to its academic mission of pursuing excellence in fundamental research and teaching, the laboratory maintains strong ties with industry and actively welcomes collaboration with its industrial partners.

Le Laboratoire de Conception Micromécanique et Horlogère (Instant-Lab), situé sur le campus EPFL de Neuchâtel dans le bâtiment Microcity, est dirigé par le Prof. Simon Henein. Il regroupe une équipe d’une douzaine de chercheurs, postdoctorants et doctorants dédiés au développement de mécanismes innovants à l’échelle centimétrique.
Le laboratoire se distingue par son expertise en conception micromécanique et par son approche interdisciplinaire, inspirée de l’horlogerie, de la robotique et de l’ingénierie aérospatiale. Ses travaux de recherche explorent de nouvelles solutions cinématiques et technologiques pour répondre aux défis de l’horlogerie mécanique, de l’instrumentation biomédicale et des systèmes aérospatiaux.
Titulaire de la Chaire Patek Philippe de 2012 à 2020, le Prof. Simon Henein a renforcé les liens entre recherche académique et innovation industrielle. Aujourd’hui, l’Instant-Lab poursuit cette dynamique en menant des recherches fondamentales de haut niveau tout en développant des collaborations étroites avec ses partenaires industriels.
