Long-distance «reversible» mobilities in Europe

This research project with the Forum Vies Mobiles (SNCF) deals with the analysis of long-distance mobility in Europe, with a particular focus on long-distance commuting, multi-residence and professional trips.

During this project, named Long-distance «reversible» mobilities in Europe, our researchers will analyze mobility data collected in 2007 in the framework of the European research program Job mobilities and family lives and will also conduct a second data collection campaign with the same individuals in France and Switzerland. Moreover, qualitative interviews will be performed next to the same mobile population.

This research program is composed of three different phases:

  • The first phase aims at deeper analyzing and understanding the so-called motility of the investigated populations, composed of highly mobile people.
  • The second phase specifically tackles the aspects related to the duration and the evolution of such lifestyles. For instance, do high-mobility practices correspond to short periods in the life course or to long-term choices?
  • The third phase focuses on the way highly mobile people perceive travel times and travel spaces in their daily life.

This project will last two years and is led by the Urban Sociology and Mobility Laboratory (LASUR) of Professor Vincent Kaufmann. It is one of the leading projects associated with “Forum Vies Mobiles”, a think tank initiated and sponsored by the SNCF.
