Capacity building program in urban mobility and transportation

The purpose of this project is to deepen and enlarge competencies of students, as well as other professionals in urban mobility and transportation in Ghana.

In many developing countries in Africa, rapid urbanization is a raising major concern. In Ghana, for instance, one of the most important issues the country needs to tackle is the rapid and inefficient urban development. The challenges are enormous but the human resources are very low in the field of mobility and transportation.

For instance, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi is an important university in Ghana, focused on engineering education. They are currently strengthening their curriculum in transportation management systems.

This project initiated at the request of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), seeks a collaboration between KNUST and EPFL to design and implement new courses, in particular online courses (MOOCs). These courses must be designed to train identified target groups which include, but are not limited to, undergraduate and graduate level students.

KNUST and EPFL will jointly develop a concept that benefits from their complementary competencies in order to establish a high quality educational program in mobility and transportation at KNUST. To reinforce teaching, applied research is envisioned as a second project step.

The project lasts 3 years and is conducted by the Transportation and Mobility Laboratory of professor Michel Bierlaire and the Urban Transportation Systems Laboratory of professor Nikolas Geroliminis. The MOOCs are produced in collaboration with the EPFL Center for Digital Education (CEDE/MOOCS Factory). The project is sponsored by the SECO.
