Mobility scenarios for 2030 on the Geneva-Paris line

This study aims at identifying potential development for Lyria’s Geneva-Paris rail line with time horizon 2030. For this purpose, EPFL researchers take into account the urban development and sociological aspects.

SBB focuses on the identification of the future key issues to be addressed by the Lyria brand, a subsidiary company of Swiss Ferdral Railways and SNCF, on the Geneva-Paris line. The aim is to define a sustainable market position and to maintain its competitiveness, taking into account mobility developments with time horizon 2030.

Considering the French and Swiss markets, we outline three contrasting development scenarios on the future of cross-border mobility. To be more specific, the study allows to estimate the number of passenger-kilometers and to evaluate the modal split between airline, bus, car(sharing), train and other transport modes. “Realistic” projections were then made to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of Lyria’s offer in terms of possible future mobility trends.

The project was realized by the Urban and Regional Planning Community (CEAT) and the Urban Sociology Laboratory (LASUR). Based on the results of this first step of analysis, this approach could potentially be extended to the whole Lyria market.
