Andreas Mortensen has been the Vice President for Research since January 1, 2017.

He is a civil engineer from the Mines de Paris and holds a PhD in materials engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he also taught and conducted research for ten years as an assistant professor, associate professor and then full professor. He joined EPFL in 1997 as an ordinary professor in the Materials Department where he heads the Laboratory of Mechanical Metallurgy. His research focuses on metallic structural materials and focuses on their development, microstructure and mechanical behavior.

Andreas Mortensen was Vice Provost for Research in 2015 and 2016. He was also Dean of the Doctoral School and Director of the Institute of Materials at EPFL.
