Environmental engineering and research rely on our ability to understand complex environmental phenomena, which have multiple interactions over a wide range of scales. To understand these phenomena and their impacts, our environment must be monitored in an adequate manner. A sustainable management of the environment requires cross-checking of large amounts of data on soil, water and atmosphere, to be able to integrate these into complex decision processes. This implies the use of instruments to collect, transfer and store the data, as well as algorithms and softwares enabling the modeling and simulation of environmental systems. The monitoring endeavor also relies on regularly updated data for better early warning and improved risk management.
Several IIE laboratories develop research on Environmental Modeling & Monitoring, concentrating on following axes: Sensor networks, remote sensing of environmental and atmospheric variables, landscape genomics, spatial decision support systems, atmospheric aerosols.
