Janusz Michalik – CFD Simulations in Engineering, Fire Safety, Building Climate Control and Contamination Control

About AFC, Zurich, Switzerland

Responsible: Dr. Stefan Barp

Air Flow Consulting (AFC) specializes in airflow-related engineering and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) primarily  in Fire  Safety  and  Building Climate  Control  and  is  quickly growing in the fields of Contaminant Control and Engineering. The company is comprised of approximately 20 professionals with primary offices located in Zurich and Bern.

The internship position fell within the CFD pool, the group of engineers and technicians that perform CAD and CFD related tasks at AFC. After an initial familiarization with in house software tools, my role included all aspects of CFD simulation: geometry creation, meshing, setting up solvers, and post-processing results. A variety of simulations of airflows in buildings and heating were performed. Also, a large amount of time was dedicated to the preparation for the ILMAC conference about clean rooms and turbo machinery. CFD simulations and corresponding visualizations (HD movies) were produced to demonstrate AFCs abilities in these specialized fields. The cases included a detailed explanation of clean room iterative analysis, comparison of water nozzles and a compressor turbo machine. Other miscellaneous tasks included such things as geometric studies to determine if building shading was adequate to meet building code requirements as well as the evaluation of ANSYS products to introduce into the AFC work flow.

My experience at AFC was very positive. I was exposed to a number of scientific software, methodologies for internal flow as well as how to approach larger scale geometries and simplify problems to utilize limited resources. The staff is amazing, always open to teaching and mentoring students.

Hainan HU – Semiconducting Thin Film Optics Simulation Software

About FLUXIM, Winterthur, Switzerland

Responsible: Dr. Beat Ruhstaller

FLUXIM is a provider of device simulation software to the display, lighting, photovoltaic and electronics industries worldwide. The company’s principal activity is the development and the marketing of the simulation software SETFOS which was designed to simulate light emission from thin film devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), thin film solar cells (organic and inorganic) and organic semiconducting multilayer systems. The software products are used worldwide in industrial and academic research labs for the study of device physics and product development.

The task in FLUXiM needs knowledge of numerical analysis and scientific computing, programming skill and knowledge about semiconductor devices. At first I need to read several paper to abstract data of different materials. Then I establish the models of OLED and organic solar cell, which have tandem structure, then perform the optical and electrical simulation of these devices in SETFOS. Since so far SETFOS can only get the IV curve of single junction of a tandem structure device, I need to develop an algorithm to extend the boundary so that we may get the IV curve of the whole tandem structure device.

The tool I used to establish OLED and organic solar cell models is SETFOS, the new algorithm for the new boundary is developed in MATLAB. Instruments are a desktop and a laptop.

During the internship I learn the working principles of organic semiconductor devices, include optic emission to generate light and optic absorption to generate current. Then I learned the simulation software SETFOS to establish model of organic semiconductor devices. During the development of algorithm I learn some advance functions of MATLAB which enhanced my MATLAB skills and gain some experiences of numerical analysis and scientific computing.

Rui WANG – Development of Metas Standard Calculator

METAS – the national metrology institute, Berne, Switzerland

Responsible: Dr. Johannes Hoffmann

Supervisors: Michael Wollensack and Dr. Markus Zeier

The Federal Office of Metrology (METAS) — the national metrology institute provides service as calibration of reference standards for internationally harmonized and recognized units of measurement with the necessary accuracy in the fields of research, industry and crafts. It also calibrates high-accuracy instruments used in areas of commerce, traffic, public safety, health and environment.

Results achieved
My work was to use Metas Standard Calculator, which was able to cascade different structure of coaxial connectors, line and shorting plane in the form of complex numbers of S-parameters.

The main task of this internship is to complete an extension of the existing software with uncertainty calculation. The software could be used for characterizing high precision RF&MW components, which serve as primary calibration standards of measurements with vector network analyzers. The uncertainties are more difficult to specify. The uncertainties of the SI units have to be propagated through the process of standard definition, calibration of the vector network analyzer (VNA) and finally measurement. Calculated from mechanical quantities with uncertainty propagation considered, S-parameters are finally achieved with uncertainty numbers shown in figure 2 after software extended.
