Ph.D. Student Positions

Students intending to do their PhD at the EPFL must first be admitted to one of the EPFL doctoral schools. Our lab, the LMTS, is affiliated with the Microsystems and Microelectronics (EPFL-EDMI), the Robotics, Control, and Intelligent Systems (EPFL-EDRS), and the Electrical Engineering doctoral schools (EPFL-EDEE).

2 PhD student positions in fiber-format soft actuators for wearables

  • The EPFL Soft Transducers Laboratory (lmts.epfl.ch) invites applications for two PhD students to develop fiber-format soft actuators in the context of the MSCA Doctoral Network SOFTWEAR.
    The goal is to develop flexible mm-diameter active fibers, driven electrostatically, that rapidly change length upon electrical command, and can block large forces. The fibers will later be woven into active textiles for soft exoskeletons.
    Candidates must hold a M.Eng. (Electrical or Mechanical engineering, Material Science or similar) or an M.Sc. (e.g., in Physics), and have a strong track record of innovation. 
    Start date is November 2022, or as agreed. The position will stay open until a suitable candidate is found. In addition to research, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to supervise master students and participate in teaching and fundraising activities. Work location is Neuchatel, Switzerland. The project includes partners in 6 European countries, Australia, and Japan.

1 PhD student positions on low-voltage zipping actuators

  • The EPFL Soft Transducers Laboratory (lmts.epfl.ch) invites applications for one PhD students to develop low-voltage zipping electrostatic actuators for applications in soft robotics. The focus of the position is on enabling new applications by drastically lowering the operating voltage. The project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
    Candidates must hold a M.Eng. (Electrical or Mechanical engineering, Material Science or similar) or an M.Sc. (e.g., in Physics), and have a strong track record of innovation. 
    Start date is January 2023, or as agreed. The position will stay open until a suitable candidate is found. 2 Postdoc positions in soft actuators for wearable robotics

  • The EPFL Soft Transducers Laboratory (lmts.epfl.ch) invites applications for two postdoctoral researchers. You will create compliant fiber-format actuators based on energy efficient principles such as electrostatic zipping, clutching, and electrohydrodynamics. By developing a deep understanding of the physics of these devices, you will design and choose materials, architectures, and scalable fabrication methods that enable unrivaled performance for soft exoskeletons. You will integrate the electroactive fibers in active textiles and explore how to obtain effective and comfortable on-body force transmission. Candidates must hold a PhD in Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related field and have a strong prublication track record. Start date is January 2023, or as agreed.  The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise PhD students and participate in teaching and fundraising activities.
