Cristina Colangelo

Operations
Outreach Specialist

Cristina Colangelo is a Scientific Outreach Specialist in the Operations Division.

Cristina plays a pivotal role in external outreach efforts, presenting BBP to the public and contributing to the implementation of outreach and scientific communication activities, including virtual outreach. She works within the Outreach team to gather scientific information and make it accessible to the lay public and promotes scientists’ awareness of the need to popularize their results. Additionally, she enhances communication and knowledge sharing among BBP teams by coordinating internal seminars promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists and engineers.

Cristina completed her PhD in Neuroscience at EPFL in July 2022 and continued her postdoctoral research within the BBP Circuits Team. Her projects aimed to create computational models to investigate neuromodulation in neural microcircuits. Specifically, she focused on developing simulations of cholinergic release in the neocortex, which required digitally reconstructing cholinergic innervation and studying its impact on neocortical network activity.

Cristina holds an M.Sc. in Neurobiology from the University of Pavia, Italy and a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences from the University of Milan, Italy.

In 2019, she was recognized with the ‘best presentation’ award at the Young Swiss Society for Neuroscience Symposium.

Outside of her job, Cristina’s passion lies in Middle Eastern and North African music and dance, particularly Egyptian folklore. She’s an accomplished dance performer, both as a solo artist and in a group. She is also a mental health activist on social media platforms.
