Master in Cyber Security

A joint-degree by EPFL and ETH Zürich | 120 ECTS

Offered jointly by EPFL and ETH Zürich, the Master’s in Cyber Security provides rigorous training in cryptography, systems and network security, hardware protection, formal methods and other core areas of cyber security. The program combines strong theoretical foundations with hands-on experience, leveraging the world-class expertise and research strengths of both institutions.

As part of the curriculum, students must complete a portion of their studies at ETH Zürich where they experience a different academic environment and benefit from a broad selection of courses. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a joint degree from EPFL and ETH Zürich.

Graduates are well prepared for careers in industry, research, and government, and are equipped to thrive in international, multidisciplinary environments.

Program structure

The program consists of two main components: the Master’s cycle (90 ECTS), followed by a Master’s project (30 ECTS), totaling 120 ECTS.

Notes:

• Master’s cycle (90 ECTS): Students complete at least 3 semesters of coursework (averaging 30 ECTS per semester), with a maximum duration of 6 semesters. After their first semester at EPFL, they must earn between 20–35 ECTS in breadth and depth courses at ETH Zürich.
• Internship requirement: Students must complete a mandatory industry internship, either as an 8-week summer internship or as a 6-month full-semester internship. The internship may also be combined with the Master’s project at the end of the Master’s cycle.
• A Master’s project (30 ECTS): Focused on cyber security, the Master’s project lasts 18 weeks (including one week of vacation) when completed at EPFL, or 26 weeks (including one week of vacation) when carried out in industry or at another university, including ETH Zürich. If the project is carried out at EPFL, ETH Zürich or another university, students must have completed and validated either an 8-week or 6-month internship in industry beforehand.
