As part of your IC Master’s studies, you are required to gain professional experience through an industry internship or, if you have not completed an internship beforehand, through a Master’s project in industry. These two activities serve different purposes and follow different academic and administrative rules.
Industry Internship
You can complete:
- a short internship of at least 8 weeks during the summer; or
- a long internship of 6 months during an academic semester.
The internship is primarily a professional experience, designed to give you practical exposure to the workplace and allow you to apply your academic knowledge in an industry setting.
Master’s project
The Master’s project is an academic project carried out at in industry, at EPFL, or at another university. It involves research or advanced engineering development and requires an EPFL academic supervisor, a written report and an oral defense.
If you carry out your Master’s project at EPFL or another university, your mandatory industry internship must have been validated beforehand. If you have not completed an internship, you may instead fulfil the internship requirement by carrying out your Master’s project in industry.
