Aspiration system (for biosafety cabinets)

Vacuum‑based aspiration systems (such as the VACUSAFE) are designed for the aspiration of aqueous solutions, including biological buffers and cell culture media. It is essential never to use the vacuum‑based aspiration system without a filter, as the filter protects the vacuum source from liquid overflow and aerosol contamination.

The filter must be replaced regularly, at least every three months, and immediately if any liquid penetration occurs.

Usually, the vacuum‑based aspiration systems are supplied with a standard 0.45 µm hydrophobic filter. Optional 0.2 µm filters are also available, and their use is strongly recommended when handling viruses or viral vectors in biosafety level 2 laboratories.

To ensure proper containment, on certain models of vacuum‑based aspiration systems, the pump air outlet can be connected to the HEPA‑filtration system of a biosafety cabinet. This is achieved by attaching silicone tubing to the pump’s air outlet connector and securing the other end to an inlet port of the biosafety cabinet, allowing the exhausted air to be filtered through the cabinet’s HEPA system (black arrows in the image above).

The manufacturer’s user manual must always be consulted to ensure the correct installation and use of aspiration systems.
