Mission
The EPFL Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) reviews projects conducted by EPFL researchers that involve human participants and/or personal data. More precisely, the HREC reviews projects that do not fall within the scope of the Federal Act on Research involving Human Beings (since these are reviewed by the Cantonal ethics committees).
The HREC evaluates whether ethical and data protection standards in research project are respected and ensures their application. The Committee is competent to approve or refuse a project. The Committee reviews, for example, projects that involve non-invasive experiments, the collection or processing of personal data, and projects that make use of interviews, observations, questionnaires/surveys, tracking of participants, or that make secondary use of information provided for other purposes (e.g. social media sites).
The HREC is composed of members with varying profiles and expertise in different areas. The HREC members are appointed by the EPFL Direction for a term of three years (renewable twice). The President of the Committee is the Associate Vice-President for Research.
