Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy

Their extreme mechanical compliance and susceptibility to external stimuli, induced by mechanical or optical probing, make living cells one of the most challenging samples to image. Atomic Force Microscopy, with its potential for imaging at wonderfully high resolution, does not image as well as Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy (SICM) on the delicate membrane surface of live cells and neuritic processes. With this and other limitations in mind, we have focused development on imaging modalities that are ideally suited to observe living cells with minimal invasiveness.
