Transitional allowance / tripling of tuition fees

Following the introduction of the tripling of fees (see the information on the page Tuition fee and other fees), a transitional financial support measure has been put in place to assist students who had not anticipated these costs in their budget when starting their studies at EPFL.

Eligible students are those who:

  1. have completed their Bachelor’s degree at EPFL and who are subject to the tripling of fees  in fees when transitioning from EPFL Bachelor’s degree to EPFL Master’s degree.
  2. are experiencing financial difficulties. Each application will be evaluated on the basis of the socio-economic situation of the student and his/her family.

If granted, the transitional allowance is allocated for the duration of the Master’s degree:

  • 90-credit Master’s degree = 3 semesters of transitional allowance
  • 120-credit Master’s degree = 4 semesters of transitional allowance

It is not necessary to request an extension for the 2nd year of the Master’s program.

  • The amount allocated is CHF 1’460 per semester (corresponding to the increase in fees per semester).
  • Payment is made by semester, following confirmation of registration.
  • Payment is made consecutively over 3 or 4 semesters, depending on the Master’s program (see above).
  • In the case of an extended Master’s program (intermediate internship, spread of credits over time, minor, etc.), the student is responsible for paying the full tuition fees after the grant has expired.
  • Payment can only be made into a personal Swiss bank/postal account. Revolut accounts are not accepted. In due course, students will be asked to fill in their bank details on IS-Academia. This request will also be made at the start of the 2nd year of the Master’s program, enabling bank details to be verified.

You will have to pay the standard tuition fee. If granted, the transitional allowance will be paid to you at a later date, once your registration has been definitively validated, i.e.:

  • Fall semester: as of November
  • Spring semester: as of April
