EPFL social scholarship

EPFL is dedicated to supporting students, in particular when their financial situation makes it difficult for them to complete their studies.

Eligibility

When can you apply for a scholarship?

  • Since the 1st year Propaedeutic, or in exceptional cases, since the CMS.

What are the eligibility criteria for a scholarship?

  • Be in a difficult financial situation
  • Have received a rejection from the cantonal scholarship program or be awaiting a response (Swiss nationals with a C permit: required / refugees: depends on the type of residence permit)

What is the principle of subsidiarity?

Social scholarships are only available as a last resort, that is:

  • if the cantonal scholarship has been rejected or while awaiting a response regarding the cantonal scholarship (if the cantonal scholarship is subsequently awarded, the social scholarship must be repaid), and
  • in addition to all other sources of funding (parental contributions, child benefits, pensions, wages, outstanding loans, and loan offers, etc.).

How long does the support last?

  • The scholarship is awarded on an academic-year basis, for 1 or 2 semesters, or for 5 or 10 months.
  • An extension of the scholarship may be requested by submitting a complete application again. If the financial situation still warrants it, the scholarship will be awarded according to the same criteria as above.

What should I do with the cantonal scholarship?

  • Applications for the cantonal scholarship should be submitted as early as possible, before the start of the academic year, in order to receive a full scholarship if awarded.
  • For the Canton of Vaud, applications open on April 1; for other cantons, please check the websites of the respective cantonal offices.

When can you apply for a scholarship?

  • After completing at least one year at EPFL and as of the successful completion of the first-year cycle.

What are the eligibility criteria for a scholarship?

  • Be in a difficult financial situation
  • Experiencing an unexpected and sudden change in your social, family, or financial situation, or in the circumstances of those responsible for your support. Indeed, funding for the entirety of your studies must be secured before joining EPFL  (Information from the Swiss Confederation and the Canton of Vaud), and EPFL cannot provide financial support in cases of poor budget planning.

What is the principle of subsidiarity?

  • Social scholarships are only applied as a last resort, once all other possibilities investigated (parental contribution, state grants, loans and loan proposals, etc.) have been rejected. However, an application to a cantonal or state organisation may be in progress at the time the application is submitted to EPFL.

Adjustments related to the tripling of taxes

Social scholarships versus transitional allowances
If a student finds him/herself in financial difficulty due to the tripling of taxes, and this is the only sudden and unexpected change in his/her socio-economic situation, then he/she must apply for a transitional allowance, not a social scholarship. An application for a social scholarship will, in this case, be refused.

If your social scholarship application is rejected
Following the rejection of your social scholarship application, you have a few days to request an evaluation of your file for a transitional allowance (please refer to the “Transitional Allowance” page for exact deadlines). To proceed, please send an email to the following address: [email protected]

Increase taken into account
From September 2025, the tripling of taxes will be taken into account in the calculation of social scholarships.

Students living in canton of Geneva or who have applied for a grant from the canton of Geneva

Students who are living in the canton of Geneva or who have applied for a grant from the cantonal grant office of the canton of Geneva (SBPE) must apply for the Hans Wilsdorf scholarship (tick the “Hans Wilsdorf scholarship” box on the form hereunder) and not the EPFL social scholarship. The Hans Wilsdorf fund is managed by EPFL and according to the same criteria as the EPFL social scholarships.
