CFF/SBB Subscriptions (Swiss Federal Railways)
In accordance with the Directive relating to the organization of responsible professional travel (LEX 5.6.2, PDF), all regular staff (under EPFL contract) employed at a workload rate of 50% or more for a minimum duration of 12 months are eligible for offers on CFF/SBB subscriptions.
Options include: a free Half-Fare Travelcard, or a subsidy of 25% in 2nd class or 15% in 1st class for the purchase of an Adult General Abonnement (GA Travelcard), or 25% off on regional travelcards.

Free Half-Fare Travelcard
Valid on:
- All CFF/SBB lines
- Most private railway companies
- Certain mountain trains, boats, and PostBuses
- Discounts on bus/metro tickets in many Swiss cities
- Regular staff employed at a minimum workload of 50% for at least 12 months
- In accordance with EPFLâs directive on travel and reimbursements (LEX 5.6.2)
Required to benefit from the subscription.
To get one for free:
- Go to a sales point (CFF/SBB station or EPFL TL desk)
- Provide a passport photo and a valid ID
Send an email to [email protected] with:
- Your CFF/SBB customer number (e.g. 012-345-678-9) as shown on your SwissPass
- Date of birth
- Postal code
The subscription will be automatically loaded onto your SwissPass.
Once the Half-Fare Travelcard is loaded onto the SwissPass, its validity can be checked via your SwissPass account.
Unused days can be reimbursed upon request at a sales point (CFF/SBB station or EPFL TL desk), by phone at 0848 44 66 88, or via the CFF/SBB website under the Help & Contact section.
- Loss of SwissPass: Replacement available at a sales point for CHF 30.â
- Leaving EPFL: The subscription remains valid until its expiry date but will not be automatically renewed
Subsidy for the General Abonnement (GA Travelcard)
With the GA Travelcard, you benefit from unlimited travel on CFF/SBB trains and other advantages, including access to various Swiss public transport services.

- Half-Fare Travelcard is not necessary anymore

- Two types of vouchers are available:
- 25% for an Adult GA in 2nd class (15% in 1st class)
- CHF 500.â for the following categories: Youth, Youth 25, Duo, Person with a disability, Familia Adult
- Staff in training (PhD students, apprentices, interns): same conditions apply

Possible if:
- â„ 60 days of professional travel per year
- AND â„ 10 km from both workplaces and home
Please note:
- One round trip on the same day = 1 travel day
- Commutes between home and contractual workplaces are not considered professional travel
- The employment contract and the job description are authoritative
- Fill in your Professional travel list (xls)over the past 12 months (document available on the Intranet, under the Documents and Forms page, section âMobility benefitsâ)
- Have the list signed by your line manager

First year of contract: Fill in the list with your predicted professional trips and attach a PDF support letter from your line manager to justify your request.
If the EPFL contract ends before the AGâs validity period, reimbursement may be required and deducted from the final salary.

EPFL Library
EPFL staff have free access to all (material and online) collections, services and training offered by the EPFL Library. Located in the Rolex Learning Center, the Library is open every day from 7 a.m. to midnight.
- Hundreds of thousands of documents are accessible online on campus or remotely when connected to the VPN:
- Newspapers and magazines
- Scientific journals
- Databases, and more.
- Printed documents can be borrowed on site using the self-service checkout machines or at the desk.
- In addition to scientific documentation, a collection of science fiction books, video games and game consoles can also be borrowed free of charge.
- All documents are listed in the BEAST catalog, including those belonging to libraries in the swisscovery network â of which EPFL is a member â and which can also be borrowed by EPFL staff.
The Library answers your questions and offers training related to finding scientific information â including with AI â as well as citation and copyright. You can register for a scheduled training session, or make an appointment directly with a librarian via the Book a Librarian platform.
