Remuneration and Benefits

EPFL applies a structured, transparent, and fair remuneration system based on the principles applicable to Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (EPF), as well as on experience and seniority. Here you will find key information related to salaries, bonuses, family allowances, and taxation, along with the benefits offered to staff.

Salary Payment and Access to Payslips

The salary is paid on the 25th of each month (or the previous working day if it falls on a weekend or public holiday).

Monthly payslips and the annual salary certificate are available on the platform:

  • Access is possible from outside the campus via EPFL’s VPN.
  • After you leave EPFL, access to SESAME is deactivated. Make sure to save or print your certificates before the end of your contract.

Salary System

The salary system of the ETH Domain applies to employees on permanent contracts (CDI) in the following roles: scientific, administrative, technical, IT, or management positions.

Salaries of Other Staff Categories

Employees on fixed-term contracts (CDD), doctoral assistants, postdocs, and student-assistants are subject to remuneration conditions that are independent of the ETH salary system.

Ancillary Activities

Any secondary activities carried out outside the EPFL employment contract must be declared to prevent conflicts of interest. These rules apply to all staff, with specific procedures depending on their role.

Bonuses and Recognition

EPFL values the commitment and performance of its staff through various mechanisms: loyalty bonuses, special bonuses, and extraordinary salary increases.

Family Allowances

The family allowances received by EPFL staff may be slightly higher than cantonal standards thanks to the ETH Domain supplement.

Tax at Source

In Switzerland, tax at source is deducted directly from the salary of individuals without a C permit or who reside abroad. It is calculated based on cantonal scales that take into account the family situation.
