Master in Physics (before 2021)

You are curious, enthusiastic, and creative
… we offer you an education in modern physics, with an initiation into research in the institutes of physics at EPFL: theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics and nanostructures, biophysics, astrophysics, etc.

Program

In the first year (60 ECTS credits) of the Masters program students concentrate on elective courses in physics (75%) and an initiation into research (25%), work that is carried out in the institutes of physics at EPFL. Choices in elective courses cover the quasi-totality of topics in modern physics and thus permit each student to deepen his or her areas of interest: theoretical physics, quantum and statistical physics, solid-state physics, relativity and cosmology, plasma physics, optics, nuclear physics, biophysics, astrophysics, and nonlinear systems and chaos. Students can also take certain courses in the engineering sections of the EPFL, such as telecommunications, signal and image processing, fluid mechanics, micro- and opto-electronics, robotics, and materials science.

Master study plans

From september 2016, study plans for the master in  physics and the master in applied physics

Master’s thesis

The program culminates in a master’s thesis  (30 ECTS credits) carried out over a four month period in a laboratory of the RESEARCH INSTITUTES IN PHYSICS of EPFL. Results of this work are often published in an internationally recognized scientific journal.
