The Digital Humanities Master at EPFL is truly interdisciplinary and thus has welcomed students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including: computer science, communication systems, life sciences, civil engineering, microengineering, electrical engineering, physics and more.

If you started the Master’s program before Autumn 2026, you must follow the DH 2026–27 Transitory Study Plan, which preserves the study plan, course groups, and credit requirements that were in effect when you were admitted. The study plan introduced in Autumn 2026 does not apply retroactively.

If you start the Master’s program in Autumn 2026 or later, you must follow the DH 2026–27 Reform Study Plan.

The revised curriculum introduces three main changes:

• The previous Computer Science and Digital Humanities core blocks have been merged into a single Core Courses group.
• A new Projects and SHS block has been created, bringing together the mandatory research project and SHS (Social Sciences and Humanities) requirements.
• The 12 ECTS research project is now mandatory for all students. Students may also complete an additional 8 ECTS research project as an elective within the Options group.

No. The revised study plan introduced as of the 2026-27 academic year is only available to students who begin the Master’s program in Autumn 2026 or later.

If you started before Autumn 2026, you must complete your studies under the DH 2026-27 Transitory Study Plan, which maintains the course groups and credit requirements that applied when you were admitted into the Master’s program.

You may take up to a maximum of 15 ECTS from unlisted courses, that is, courses not included your Master’s study plan (“courses outside the study plan”). These courses must either be included on the list of pre-approved courses or be approved on a case-by-case basis. The credits will count under Group 2 (Options).

Please note that for EPFL courses with limited capacity, students who do not have the course listed in their study plan are not authorized to register.

If the course you wish to register for appears on the list of authorized courses, you may register directly in IS-Academia at the start of the semester by searching for it under “Other Subjects”. If you click on the arrow, a window will open in which you can enter either the course title or the course code and select the correct course.

For all other courses not on the list, you must submit a request using this form at the start of the semester. Once you receive authorization, you can then register for the course in IS-Academia, under “Other Subjects”.

In addition, students in the Master’s program in Digital Humanities may take courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lausanne (UNIL). Please note that all UNIL courses are taught in French.

Students in Digital Humanities are encouraged to do an internship in a wide variety of places such as NGOs, federations, cultural institutions, libraries, archives, media companies, museums or industry in general.
