Nexus Programme

Jointly sponsored by the Vice Presidency for Finances, the Vice Presidency for Human Development, and the Information Systems Domain, the strategic NEXUS programme aims to modernize EPFL’s administrative management IT system, which has been in operation for over 25 years.

Why this programme

The administrative management IT system (SAP), implemented at EPFL in 2000, has become obsolete. Without an upgrade, it can no longer be maintained reliably. In addition, numerous complex customizations have accumulated over time, making the current solution and its associated processes difficult to adapt to both the needs of the user community and today’s requirements. This situation now calls for a shift towards an IT system, as well as financial and human resources processes, that are aligned with industry standards and best practices. In this context, the programme aims to modernize the administrative management IT system and optimize several key processes in the areas of finance and human resources.

Two initiatives running in parallel

The NEXUS programme unfolds through two complementary components, moving forward side by side, with an official launch set for January 2027.

This project aims to optimize financial management and human resources processes through the implementation of the latest version of our SAP system (migration from SAP ECC to SAP S/4).

Its objective is to deliver a system that fully meets the needs of the EPFL community. To this end, extensive testing will be conducted throughout the project, in close collaboration with the user community.

The current tools will remain in operation until their replacement in January 2027.

This project aims to optimize human resources management processes through the implementation of a new system: SAP SuccessFactors.

The objective is to complement the administrative management handled in SAP S/4 with dedicated talent management modules. Deployment has been progressing step by step since 2024, following a roadmap:

  • Performance: evaluation and objectives (01.2024)

  • Recruitment (04.2024)

  • Bonus management (07.2025)

  • Training (2027)
