Smart Grid Data Compression

In the near future EPFL is planning to deploy campus-widesmart grid infrastructure.

The goal of the communication network prototype is to ensure communication between sites equipped with Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and the electrical network state estimator.

In the same time there is the need to store the produced measurement data for post-processing. Hence, efficient data compression techniques are needed.

In our previous work we evaluated conventional data compression techniques. However, having in mind large amount of data which will be generated, more efficient techniques would be beneficial. The goal of the project is to exploit the information redundancy due to spatial correlation between measurement sites and already existing algorithms for electrical network state estimators in order to have more efficient compression scheme.
