LIVING PERIPHERY | Bercher Station 2017-18

Approaches promoting targeted densification processes in order to limit urban sprawl are not limited to city centers. Territories located in the municipalities of the agglomeration also constitute strategic opportunities for the transformation of urban areas, especially those located near public transport and with densification potential. But if the question of density is a key quantitative issue, it should be considered as a necessary but not sufficient condition. From a sustainability perspective, the development of these sectors requires optimized consideration of environmental, socio-cultural, and economic aspects, which also raises many qualitative questions for the architectural project.

For this 2017-2018 academic year, the LIVING PERIPHERY Studio continues to explore the potential of the sector located at the end of the Lausanne-Echallens-Bercher (LEB) railway line. The direct proximity of Bercher station gives the sector some potential for densification, which must be revealed and defined through the search for creative solutions, adapted to the peri-urban character. Delimited by the railroad, an industrial zone, a village street, and a residential area, the site also constitutes a space reconciling landscapes. With this in mind, the Studio continues a reflection on spaces for economic activity and public spaces adapted to a peri-urban situation, this time retaining and juggling some of the existing buildings. At the programmatic level, the workshop intensifies its research on the specific notion of intermediate housing, whose characteristics are situated between those of the individual house and those of the collective building.
