RHODANIE URBAINE Geneva 2019-20

At a time of unprecedented convergence between the objectives of densification within the built environment, of ecological transition, and risk management for flood prone areas opens an era of reconciliation between the river and the urban areas it passes through. In this context, undervalued sites to date have proved particularly suitable for urban regeneration and the creation of new sustainable neighborhoods. Beyond the issues specific to the technical and landscape measures of flood protection and to the transformation of industrial activities, multiple urban and architectural challenges question the proper project approach to adopt for the development of these new fluvial neighborhood.

Located in the district of Junction in Geneva, the site chosen for the 2019-2020 edition is home of a depot of public transport Geneva (TPG) whose location is likely to be questioned in the coming decades. As a unique sector of the Geneva agglomeration at the confluence of the Rhone and Arve, it represents a particularly strategic space to forge new links between the city and its river. In this respect, the RHODANIE URBAINE Studio explore through the architectural project the multiple challenges and potentialities of development for these urban shores. A strong attention is given to the issue of urban housing and interaction with cultural activities already present in the area. Relevant reflections on public spaces in relation to the specific river characteristics of the site will also be part of the process.
