Statistical and physical characterization of rainfall-driven overland flow morphologies

Eroding catchment landscapes self-organize into drainage networks, which are known to exhibit scale invariance in properties such as the network length-area relationship.

One aim of this project, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), is to address such statistical metrics for laboratory-scale overland flow morphologies, for the case of overland flow in the absence of an observable drainage network.

Catchment geomorphological characteristics can be predicted by the widely-used Landscape Evolution Model in the case where an observable network is formed. This model was modified to simulate overland flow without formation of a network.
