Exam and assessment regulations

The EPFL Examination regulations cover many aspects of examination and grading at EPFL (written or oral examinations, mid-term tests, semester and master projects). They apply to the CMS (Cours de Mathématiques Spéciales), Bachelor, Master and, in some cases, to PhD levels.

The objective of these regulations is to guarantee that the examinations are conducted correctly and that any form of cheating is prevented. They aim to ensure that marks assigned to students adequately reflect the student’s performance.

The main points are:

  • A report is required for all written and oral exams, conducted during an exam session.
  • The question paper used in the exam is to be filed by the relevant Section for a period of 5 years, in order to easily trace the content of each exam.
  • The scripts handed in by the students are kept for six months after the end of the corresponding study cycle.
  • The lecturer is responsible for the room layout, for assigning seating places to students, for checking the identity of the students and for having adequate supervision for the exam in place.
  • The lecturer personally attends the examination. In case of force majeure, his/her substitute must be approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  • For oral exams internal observers are required.

For further information you can also consult the pages below:

Students who experience discomfort or health problems during an examination session that prevent them from continuing the exam, will have their exam canceled without penalty and provided that :

– The teacher is informed and she/he (or the person supervising the exam) calls First Aid for help (tel. 115 or 693 3000)

– The event is duly reported in the “Protocole d’épreuve en session d’examen”.

– The student provides a medical certificate to student services as soon as possible.

The procedure is similar as the one for missed tests described on this page.
