In order to promote a sustainable urban development, it is important to understand the ecological mechanism that influence the current state and the dynamics of biodiversity in urban landscapes and in this context to assess the ecosystem services provided by urban green spaces. Related to the ongoing work in the Grand Genève project and to other important sources of monitoring information about land use processes (Observatoire statistique transfrontalier, Office cantonal de la statistique Genève, Direction régionale Rhône-Alpes de l’Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques, INSEE) the URBANGENE project aims to establish reference values of the current state of the biodiversity dynamics within the Grand Genève area and to develop and set up resources (indexes, information systems, maps) and recommendations in order to promote a sustainable urban development and the conservation, management and promotion of biodiversity in rural and urban areas.
