Data

Mission

The Data Team within SV-IT supports and empowers the entire SV community in adopting robust, reproducible, and compliant data management practices across research domains — particularly in genomics and imaging.

Research Data Engineers (RDEs) are embedded directly within laboratories to act as key enablers in establishing and implementing effective data management procedures and associated tools. They work closely with scientists and technical staff to ensure data integrity, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Data Management & Infrastructure:
Design, develop, optimize, and maintain data management processes, tools, and systems tailored to research needs — including file server management, workstations and cluster access, and input/output workflows.

  • Onboarding & Lifecycle Support:
Support the onboarding and offboarding of researchers and staff, manage data collection setup, and ensure smooth data transfer and sharing across teams and platforms.

  • Storage & Archiving:
Oversee cold storage solutions and data preservation strategies to ensure long-term accessibility and compliance with data governance standards.

  • Knowledge Sharing & Best Practices:
Develop and coordinate a network of expertise on data management best practices across genomics, imaging, and related domains. Promote standardized, reusable processes and tools aligned with FAIR principles.

  • Tooling & Integration:
Build and maintain application services, data exchange modules, and extensions to enhance interoperability between systems and support seamless data workflows.

  • Collaboration & Partnerships:
Serve as a central point of contact for data management initiatives within EPFL, fostering collaboration with other EPFL units and contributing to a unified data culture across the institution.
