If you are searching to rent a car for short distances or for just a few hours (e.g. while changing apartment, transfer heavy things etc) there is a useful service in Switzerland called mobility.
The idea is that through a site you book a car from a specifc station/parking mobility in Lausanne (there are really many such parkings) and by touching the specific card that you have received, you unlock the car and go your way. In the end, you need to return the car to the same parking where you picked it.
For student of EPFL the subscription to the service is free for the first year and after that you have to pay an annual fee. For the use of the cars, the charge depens on the time you kept the car and the distance traveled.
