Future of Writing

Invention, it must be humbly admitted, does not consist in creating out of void, but out of chaos.
Mary Shelley
The Future of Writing project is a research and experimental initiative exploring how, and if, artificial intelligence is transforming contemporary writing. The goal is to create a collection of stories and critical reflections that challenge genre conventions, combining imagination with critical thinking.
Spring 2025: A week-long workshop for 6 writers.
The project includes participation in a workshop conceived by writer Caterina Serra, who coordinates the project for the EPFL College of Humanities in Lausanne.
The workshop will be an immersive experience lasting one week, both individual and collective, during which 6 writers will engage with the potential and challenges of using artificial intelligence, discussing the impact that interaction with digital technologies has on the creative process, on reality, and on the world(s) they write about and within.
Writers will bring the experiment to life, giving voice to the physical, material, intellectual, and artistic experience, challenging perceptions and preconceptions about the role and authorship of writers. They will examine both the bright and dark sides of AI, questioning the present and imagining the future of writing—or the end of a certain idea of writing. Or even of the world.
The workshop will be conducted in Italian to ensure a deep, focused approach to the language and its possibilities. This monolingual model will later be adaptable and replicable in other linguistic contexts, paving the way for future international expansion.
The collection, comprising stories and reflections on the relationship between writing and technology, will have a hybrid narrative structure, transcending genres, situated between the short story and the literary essay. It will feature a dialogical, open form, committed to a lucid, free, and visionary political perspective. With the aim of publishing a collection that represents the results of the experience, an Italian publisher will be involved as a project partner. The publisher will play an active role in ensuring meticulous editorial curation of the texts in preparation for publication.
During the workshop, there will be opportunities to document the experience through interviews, photos, and videos of key moments. Writers will bring the experiment to life, giving voice to the physical, material, intellectual, and artistic experience, challenging perceptions and preconceptions about the role and authorship of writers. They will examine both the bright and dark sides of AI, questioning the present and imagining the future of writing – or the end of a certain idea of writing. Or even of the world.
