Post-doctoral fellow in population geography and spatial analysis

The Urban Demography Laboratory (URBDEMO) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is seeking to recruit a post-doctoral researcher, funded at 80-100% for 1 year, to be hired from December 1 2023 on (or as soon as possible thereafter).

Tasks

The post-doctoral fellow will be recruited as part of the ‘Blue City’ project. The Blue City project is a transdisciplinary consortium that aims to map the multi-layered and interconnected network of flows (of people, materials, energy, natural flows, etc.) in the city of Lausanne, and to create a reactive urban digital twin for a post-pandemic world transformed by digital technology. Tasks within the project will involve fine-grained quantitative and spatial estimation and analysis of population and migration based on register data and other forms of big data.

Profile required

The candidate will have the following skills:

– Hold a PhD in demography, quantitative geography or another relevant field

– A solid background in (small-area) estimation and analysis

– Mastery of cutting-edge methods of statistical analysis and spatial analysis/econometrics

– A solid experience in handling and integrating numerous data tables and spatial objects (such as raster data)

– Fluency in R programming (incl. for spatial data analysis and visualization)

– Experience in digital and computational demography is a plus

– Fluency in English. Fluency in French is a plus

– An interest in teamwork and multidisciplinary approaches combining social sciences, spatial sciences, computer science, architecture, engineering and environmental sciences

Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Urban Demography Laboratory

The Urban Demography Laboratory (URBDEMO) aims to gain a better understanding of population dynamics in Swiss cities and around the world. As part of the Natural, Architectural and Built Environment Faculty (ENAC) at EPFL, the URBDEMO uses demographic and spatial analysis to study patterns of urban growth and sprawl, the role played by migration, and the resulting risks and opportunities for socio-economic and environmental development.

Working conditions

The postdoctoral researcher will be based in Lausanne, at the headquarters of the EPFL. He or she will have an office and a workstation, with the possibility of partial teleworking.

To apply

– A CV;

– A covering letter;

– A personal essay (such as a peer-reviewed publication)

The review of applications will start on October 1 2023 until the position is filled. Applications should be sent to: Annick Evéquoz, Administrative Assistant, [email protected]. For informal inquiries, please contact Mathias Lerch ([email protected]) who will supervise this sub-project within the ‘Blue City’ project.
