The Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Geographic Information for Urban Planning, jointly offered by the University of Geneva and the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, is a continuing education programme dedicated to the use of geographic information and spatial data in contemporary urban planning. Through the overarching theme of quality-of-life assessment, the programme explores how geographic information can support urban analysis, planning, implementation and evaluation, while also addressing the opportunities and limitations of digital technologies, web-based tools and Big Data in urban development.
Designed for urban planning professionals and participants wishing to strengthen their expertise in spatial analysis and geomatics, the programme combines theoretical lectures, applied case studies, data-processing workshops and field visits. Participants develop both conceptual and methodological skills related to the acquisition, analysis and representation of spatial information in urban contexts.
The programme is directed by Prof. Hy Dao and Prof. Laurent Matthey (University of Geneva), together with Dr Jérôme Chenal and Dr Stéphane Joost (EPFL). Coordination is ensured by Dr Marlène Leroux.
