Programmes

MAS (Master of Advanced Studies) and CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) programmes in architecture are designed for professionals who wish to deepen their skills and specialise. MAS programmes, which last one to two years (60 ECTS), offer in-depth training, while CAS programmes, which are shorter (10-30 ECTS), focus on specific areas. The Extension School EPFL is responsible for expanding access to EPFL’s teaching and resources, offering highly relevant, agile and holistic continuing education programmes.

MAS (Master of Advanced Studies)

Prof. Philippe Thalmann EPFL
This programme was created in 1999 under the name ‘Postgraduate Course in Real Estate Expertise’. It has evolved over the years to become the current continuing education programme in real estate expertise, culminating in a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) degree.

Prof.Milica Topalović ETHZ, Prof. Paola Viganò EPFL (until 2025-26), Prof. Charlotte Malterre-Barthes EPFL RIOT (from 2026-27)
The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Urban and Territorial Design, offered jointly by ETH Zurich and EPFL, aims to provide innovative training in urban and territorial design that responds to social and environmental challenges, both in the context of the city-territory and at the scale of larger landscapes. The MAS is presented as a laboratory and forum where agendas, design strategies and governance models are proposed for specific territories. Swiss and international case studies are explored through intensive ethnographic surveys and field workshops. These studies engage in dialogue with local communities, local actors, NGOs and governance bodies.

CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies)

Prof. Corentin Fivet, EPFL SXL; Dr. Barbara Lambec, EPFL SXL
This CAS is designed for construction professionals seeking to integrate circular economy principles and enhance the value of existing buildings. The program (334 hours, 12 ECTS) covers material diagnostics, maintenance, selective deconstruction, stock management, and design integrating reused components. Participants complete 12 modules, choose a specialization (Engineering, Architecture, or Tendering), and carry out an individual project presented to a jury. The course runs from September to September in Fribourg (EPFL), combining theory, on-site practice, and expert-led sessions. Admission requires a Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of relevant professional experience.

CAS Building & Resources (UNIL-EPFL Continuing Education) ↗︎

The UNIFR-IDC legal course (Fribourg and Lausanne) trains experts in the basics of the law applicable to their assignments. It provides an understanding of the legal framework for mandates, responsibilities, procedures, and the expectations of legal professionals. Topics covered include civil procedure, judicial and private expertise, arbitration, mediation, expert liability, and specific areas of expertise (debt collection, expropriation, etc.). The course comprises 150 hours of lectures, independent study and a dissertation, for a total of 15 ECTS credits. It leads to a certificate issued by the University of Fribourg.

The CAS in Technical Expertise in Real Estate at the Fribourg School of Engineering and Architecture (HEIA-FR), which awards a HES-SO Certificate of Advanced Studies (15 ECTS credits), is one of three modules in the Master of Advanced Studies in Real Estate Expertise organised by EPFL. This programme enables students to analyse and assess building pathologies, their causes and remediation solutions. Essential for avoiding unpleasant surprises during property valuations, it can be taken independently of the other MAS modules as continuing professional development.
