Medium Voltage Direct Current Technologies

Thanks to the flexibility offered by power electronics, DC systems are being considered for various applications as new and important technology. Several of our research activities are directly related to MVDC power distribution networks and associated conversion and protection technologies.

High Power Electronics

Working with MWs of power is somewhat different from the breadboard electronics. All our research projects deal with innovative converter topologies, electric, thermal and dielectric designs, supported with advanced control algorithms, improving the overall conversion efficiency, reliability and availability. Some of the concepts, we are currently dealing with, are closely related to the, so-called, solid-state transformers.

Characterization

To get maximum performances out of discrete power electronic components, characterization is often required, either at the level of devices (e.g. power semiconductors), materials (e.g. magnetics) or custom made assemblies (e.g. medium frequency transformers).

Funding

Our research activities are supported through various funding schemes from the public sector (e.g. CTI, SNSF, SFOE), as well as from industrial partners who seek research support in the field of power electronics.
