MINT for Women
Building Confidence for Women at EPFL

Gender stereotypes in the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) can affect female students’ confidence, sense of competence and perseverance, sometimes to the extent of discouraging them or hindering their success at EPFL.
A working group comprising students, PhD students (all female) and the Student Affairs/Social consultation is proposing initiatives to help reduce the pressure felt, boost confidence, develop skills, encourage perseverance and create spaces for support, mentoring and networking.
The Women’s Lunch
Feeling supported, encouraged, understood or having received advice from more experienced peers is a key factor in the success of many women. The Women’s Lunch aims to be an informal and open meeting place, enabling students and researchers of different generations to meet and exchange ideas.
Public
This pilot project begins with 2 sections: Women from Mathematics and Physics sections, students to researchers : BA, MA, PhD, Postdoc, professors.

TSA Group

This group is aimed at EPFL students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and provides a supportive space for sharing experiences, mutual learning and skills development, enabling everyone to find resources and support throughout their academic journey. Workshops are held around fifteen times during the academic year and are organised by the Student Affairs Service/Social consultation and co-facilitated with Inclusio Autisme.
The topics covered include self-confidence, social interactions with fellow students – particularly during group work – and communication with lecturers. Strategies are suggested for preparing for exams, managing energy levels, recognising different forms of exhaustion and preventing autistic burnout. The programme also includes testimonials from students and graduates, as well as discussions on career paths after the Master’s degree, whether in industry or research. Some sessions are adapted during the semester in line with the needs expressed by participants.

Boost your self-confidence with 3 simple and practical tools
This workshop aims to boost self-confidence through three simple and practical tools that can easily be applied in everyday life. It begins by exploring the causes and consequences of a lack of self-confidence, in order to understand its mechanisms and impacts. It then presents practical ways to gradually build self-confidence. Finally, participants put these insights into practice through small-group exercises, including role-plays, guided discussions, reinforcement activities, as well as moments of meditation and relaxation.
