Christmas celebration at UNIL

December the 16th, 5:15p.m., at Grange de Dorigny

A/RO has participated at the intercultural Christmas celebration “EthNoël” organised by the the Chaplancy of UNIL-EPFL.

The aim was to put forward the diverse cultural ways in celebrating Christmas. Through songs-charols, dances, prayers etc. we have offered a joyful evening, gastronomical and spiritual.

A few photos can be seen here.

Romanian cinema*: Occident

December the 11th,  7p.m., in ELA2

“In Occident three stories unfold – closely overlapping in terms of time, place and characters – to build a snapshot of Romania at a crucial turning-point in its history. Though nimbly incorporating the political, social, economic and historical context of a nation previously best known for “Count Dracula and Nadia Comaneci,” this is a film that deals with its major issues by concentrating on ordinary people trying to deal with the pressures of modern life”. (more)

Before the movie, popcorn and different drinks were sold.
After the projection, we had the opportunity to discuss about the movie and to drink a glass of wine offered by A/RO. Everyone was invited!

Game evening

November the 13th, 6:30p.m., CO Lobby ground 0

The school year has already started for two months and therefore many of us were stressed, were having exams and generally felt too serious, and this attitude was reflecting outside school or work hours. It felt the time was right to do something fun which could take our worries away. It was time for an A/RO game evening!

We had all sorts of games and lots of good humour, which you can also see from the pictures!

Literary meeting with the writer Marius Daniel Popescu

November the 12th, 5:30p.m., Room CO 016, EPFL

The Romanian Embassy in Berne and the Romanian Student Association in EPFL (A/RO) organized a literary meeting with the author of the novel “Symphony of the Wolf “. The writer is a laureate of the Robert Walser Prize 2008 and the Vaud Cultural Prize for Literature 2008.

He answered questions and read a few passages from his book which has conquered the juries with the writing quality, style, storytelling and vision.

The meeting was followed by an aperitif and a book signing.

Photos from the meeting.

Romanian Cinema*: Ryna

November the 6th, 7p.m., in room ELA2

“A girl forced to grow up in boy’s clothing breaks away from her oppressive family in “Ryna”, a striking feature debut by Romanian helmer Ruxandra Zenide. Much of the pic’s strength is in leaning on the frail shoulders of newcomer Dorotheea Petre, who is insightful and refreshingly contemporary as a boy-girl-woman searching for her identity. Original plotting and a moody atmosphere should help push the film beyond fest screenings to reach selected arthouse auds.” — by Deborah Young, for Variety.

Romanian Cinema

Each 4 weeks, 3 questions, for 2 hours

Is it that Romanians laugh and cry just like everybody else?
Could they give a new taste to your joys, to your sorrows?
Why do they say that “Life is complex and has many aspects” (Filantropica – 2002)?

A/RO invites you each month to discover your own answers! More details on the home page, and a few pictures here.

Vivapoly 2008

Crowded place. Everybody seems to be here. They laugh, but deep inside, we know, they are hungry. You can see it by their looks. They focus on the grill. And sometimes you seem to see a tear in their eyes. Is it the smoke? It’s ok, the “mititei” are almost done. We also have wine, you know? From our home country. But you can also find it here in Lausanne. Oh look, another portion is ready, you’re next. Is it good? Of course, it’s good! And we thank very much to all of you, the ones who gave, the ones who took. Vivapoly, we wait for you again…

The Esplanade set on fire by the Romanian mititei

As part of the Cap sud event organized by Ingénieurs du Monde on the subject of durable urban development, we have tested our culinary talents by treating over a hundred people with a traditional Romanian lunch.
Facing cold and rain, A/RO members served delicious “mititei” together with mustard and salad and animated the Esplanade for around two hours with Romanian music and a lot of laughs. You can see some pictures here.

Colors, glue, and lots of laughs at the Spring Workshop

Judging by the number of participants, the number of “martisoare” created and the amount of laughs, this year’s workshop of “Martisor” was a huge success. We got together on Friday, February 22nd in a friendly, colorful setting, full of beads, bows, flowers and, above all, large amounts of glue. We made martisoare, we had lots of fun and took lots of pictures. It was a great pleasure to have Mrs. Mihaela Feher, cultural attaché at the Romanian Embassy in Bern, as a special guest and to see how our evening looked like from an “objective angle“.

Happy Birthday, A/RO!

A year after being founded, on Wednesday, February 20th, the second general assembly of the association took place. We are proud to announce a brand new committee. Diana Ciressan is our new president, Alexandru Arion is vice-president and Mihai Gurban is treasurer. Also, our first webmaster, Iulian Dragos, now shares his workload with Oana Jurca, Dan Alistarh and Maria Mateescu. Bogdan Lazar is our DJ and will be organizing our social evenings, while Denisa Ghita will be taking care of movie projections.

This year’s committee is bigger, but so are our plans, so help from new members is always welcome.

In the coming year we hope to have an even stronger association, with an emphasis on the idea that A/RO is not the project of a few people, but of all Romanians at EPFL.
