The EPFL School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor (PATT) of Structural Engineering and Mechanics in the Institute of Civil Engineering (IIC).
The Institute of Civil Engineering in ENAC carries out fundamental and interdisciplinary research across the core disciplines of Civil Engineering. Within this wider context, this position in structural engineering and mechanics will contribute to the fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms causing deterioration in new and existing infrastructure systems due to mechanical actions and time-dependent phenomena, such as ageing and their relevance for maintenance strategies for existing infrastructure. Other topics of interest span across vulnerability assessment, and the development of effective intervention strategies that leverage innovative numerical and experimental approaches.
The successful candidate will have a strong research background in structural engineering and mechanics, also related to integrated experimental and computational approaches for assessing and maintaining existing civil infrastructure, including, for example, the potential integration of sensing data into both physics- and data-driven approaches. The candidate is expected to develop an innovative and internationally recognized research program leading to an outstanding record of scientific accomplishments.
As a faculty member of the Civil Engineering Section, the candidate will be expected to have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. Examples of possible teaching assignments include core structural engineering and mechanics subjects as well as design-oriented courses at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Innovative and student-centred teaching approaches are particularly encouraged.
