Carla Schmid, Associate Policy Analyst – Environment and Climate Change at UNDP Cambodia
What is your current position and organization? What are your main responsibilities?
I work as Associate Policy Analyst – Environment and Climate Change at UNDP Cambodia. I support the development and implementation of projects that protect natural resources.
How does your work contribute to sustainability or have a positive impact on society or the environment?
My job is directly linked to conserving, protecting and enhancing the environment whilst ensuring social prosperity for stakeholders. I am exposed to a wide range of topics, from technical aspects, such as the Nagoya Protocol, to collaborating with various stakeholders, including updating strategic documents like the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
How did the SMT master’s program prepare you for this role in terms of skills or mindset? Was there a specific project, course, or experience during the program that particularly influenced your career path?
On the one hand, the master included a diverse set of topics related to sustainability, which helps me assimilate new information quickly. On the other hand, the management components have provided me with key tools for communication, personal development and leadership, enabling me to be more effective in intercultural teams.
David Campbell, Head of Operations & Climate at Frigg.eco
What is your current position and organization? What are your main responsibilities?
I currently work as Head of Operations & Climate at Frigg.eco, a startup focused on renewable energy finance. My responsibilities span client onboarding, platform design (especially around project monitoring and analysis), and impact measurement.
How does your work contribute to sustainability or have a positive impact on society or the environment?
Our work focuses on accelerating climate-compatible infrastructure and tackling the $2.7 trillion renewable energy finance gap. We are making the market more efficient, benefitting project developers, investors, and energy consumers in the process. On a weekly basis, I help project developers overcome financing barriers and speed up the energy transition.
How did the SMT master’s program prepare you for this role in terms of skills or mindset? Was there a specific project, course, or experience during the program that particularly influenced your career path?
Beyond interdisciplinarity, the SMT program trained me to connect complex topics and understand how systems interact. That is essential for working on climate, which intersects with finance, tech, society, politics.. everything. The “Science of Climate Change” course that I followed at SMT was especially foundational for developing a solid grasp of the issue.
Charlotte Luise Ahrens, Sustainability Analyst and Strategist at SBB/CFF/FFS
What is your current position and organization? What are your main responsibilities?
I work as a Sustainability Analyst and Strategist at SBB/CFF/FFS, driving decarbonization both within our organization and among our suppliers and industry partners. I am responsible for our Scope 3 decarbonization project that involves setting ambitious reduction targets, developing strategic roadmaps, and tracking progress over time.
How does your work contribute to sustainability or have a positive impact on society or the environment?
My work focuses mainly on the environmental aspect, specifically the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain. This includes the optimization of material use, the application of circular economy practices, as well as the embedding of sustainability practices into the procurement process. Beyond emissions, these hotspots intersect with other ESG topics like biodiversity and human rights due diligence, which are addressed in collaboration with my colleagues.
How did the SMT master’s program prepare you for this role in terms of skills or mindset? Was there a specific project, course, or experience during the program that particularly influenced your career path?
Coming from a pure supply chain background, the SMT master gave me a toolbox that enabled a multi-functional career opportunity. The SMT three-pillar setup with sustainability focus on leadership, technology, and economics, is more than present in my current role. During the master’s many courses prepared me for my time after. Sustainable Marketing taught me how to make sustainability attractive in an often-harsh business environment (already confirmed); Sustainability Accounting prepared me for our first sustainability audit, while the skills acquired in Statistics and Data Analysis are my daily support for environmental analyses and business case calculations.
